Review: Queen of the Dead

Book: Queen of the Dead (Ghost and the Goth Book 2)
Author: Stacey Kade
Publisher: Hyperion Books
Release Date: June 7, 2011
Pages: 288
Source: ARC Tour
Date Read: March 16, 2011

Summary:

After being sent back from the light, Alona Dare - former homecoming queen, current Queen of the Dead - finds herself doing something she never expected: working. Instead of spending days perfecting her tan by the pool (her typical summer routine when she was, you know, alive), Alona must now cater to the needs of other lost spirits. By her side for all of this - ugh - “helping of others” is Will Killian: social outcast, seer of the dead, and someone Alona cares about more than she’d like.

Before Alona can make a final ruling on Will’s “friend” or “more” status, though, she discovers trouble at home. Her mom is tossing out Alona’s most valuable possessions, and her dad is expecting a new daughter with his wicked wife. Is it possible her family is already moving on? Hello! She’s only been dead for two months! Thankfully, Alona knows just the guy who can put a stop to this mess.

Unfortunately for Alona, Will has other stuff on his mind, and Mina, a young (and beautiful) seer, is at the top of the list. She’s the first ghost-talker Will’s ever met—aside from his father—and she may hold answers to Will’s troubled past. But can she be trusted? Alona immediately puts a check mark in the “clearly not” column. But Will is - ahem - willing to find out, even if it means leaving a hurt and angry Alona to her own devices, which is never a good idea.

Packed with romance, lovable characters, and a killer cliffhanger, Queen of the Dead is the out-of-this-world sequel to The Ghost and the Goth.

Yani's Analysis:
I was sooooooo excited to read this book and that might have been my undoing. I loved the first one so much I just wanted to jump back in to Will and Alona, but alas something is keeping them apart. This book felt so long yet so short at the same time. The whole book takes place in a span of a couple of days, so its very action packed and detailed. The characters are still amazing, I really LOVE Will and Alona together, but this second book is more about the back story. We learn more about Will's father and Alona's family.Still I just wanted to spend some alone time with Will and Alona, hopefully the third book can give me some more of that.

Also, this book has a little bit of a more serious undertone, the characters are growing up, finding things about the world they live in, its a little more realistic. There is so much more I want to say about the book, but I don't want to give anything away. I am very curious to see where Kade is taking the story, which has grown from a ghost love story to a more mature growth story of a girl who thought she had it all, but didn't know what she was missing and a boy who because of his special ability used to keep people out and is now finally letting them in.

The writing is amazing as usual. Kade really knows her characters and makes me feel like I know them too.
I can't wait till the third books comes out in 2012.... Gah thats a long time from now!

Book Review : Hex Hall

Book: Hex Hall (Book 1)
Author: Rachel Hawkins
Publisher: Hyperion Books
Release Date: March 2, 2010
Pages: 323
Source: Bookshelf
Date Read: April 10, 2011

Three years ago, Sophie Mercer discovered that she was a witch. It's gotten her into a few scrapes. Her non-gifted mother has been as supportive as possible, consulting Sophie's estranged father--an elusive European warlock--only when necessary. But when Sophie attracts too much human attention for a prom-night spell gone horribly wrong, it's her dad who decides her punishment: exile to Hex Hall, an isolated reform school for wayward Prodigium, a.k.a. witches, faeries, and shapeshifters.

By the end of her first day among fellow freak-teens, Sophie has quite a scorecard: three powerful enemies who look like supermodels, a futile crush on a gorgeous warlock, a creepy tagalong ghost, and a new roommate who happens to be the most hated person and only vampire student on campus. Worse, Sophie soon learns that a mysterious predator has been attacking students, and her only friend is the number-one suspect.

As a series of blood-curdling mysteries starts to converge, Sophie prepares for the biggest threat of all: an ancient secret society determined to destroy all Prodigium, especially her.
Yani's Analysis:
What can I say about this book that hasn't been said. This book has been sitting in my bookshelf after I bought a bargain copy from borders. Finally, after reading yet another positive review I picked it up. Rachel Hawkins you have a new fan in me! The book was soooo funny. It almost read like a satire of all things paranormal, yet still had the serious aspects and mystery to it.Rachel's writing is banter like, sarcastic, and filled with pop culture reference/jokes.

Although the book is very funny, there are some strong themes to it. Is evil is inherent or chosen? Does doing one bad things makes you a bad person? All these things are ideal that Sophie struggles with as she doesn't know who to trust is the new school full of paranormal Prodigium. There are so many secrets and more is revealed as you get close to the end.

Sophie goes into that school a carefree and naive girl and in the end she becomes a girl that struggles with the amount of power she possesses."With great power comes great responsibility." I by the end of the book I think Sophie understands that.

Really liked this book, it was so different from other paranormal books and includes every paranormal species. Can't wait to read what comes next!

Book Review : Shift

Book: Shift (Shade #2)
Author: Jeri Smith-Ready
Publisher: Simon Pulse

Pages: 384

Date Read: April 8, 2011

Aura’s life is anything but easy. Her boyfriend, Logan, died, and his slides between ghost and shade have left her reeling. Aura knows he needs her now more than ever. She loves Logan, but she can’t deny her connection with the totally supportive, totally gorgeous Zachary. And she’s not sure that she wants to.

Logan and Zachary will fight to be the one by her side, but Aura needs them both to uncover the mystery of her past—the mystery of the Shift.
As Aura’s search uncovers new truths, she must decide whom to trust with her secrets…and her heart.
Yani's Analysis:
There could not have been a better sequel to Shade than Shift. It's freaking perfect! And if it where to end right now, without a third book it would leave me satisfied. Don't get me wrong, I am dying to know what comes next for Aura, but the ending was just fantastic.

As you all know I love my ghosts and Logan, despite his immature behavior at times, is my favorite ghost boy. In this book you can see how his afterlife has affected him, he has matured. Even though has hasn't aged a day over 17, he is becoming more adult. But as much as I love Logan, Zachary stole my heart in this book.

As it is the second book more is revealed about he shift, and how the solstices and all that astronomy stuff has to do with it. I have never been into astronomy before, but this book makes me want to go sit outside and stare at the stars.

There where some unexpected twists, especially in the first couple of pages and the last, so even though the mystery is unraveling there is till more to learn. I don't want to give too much away other that one of my favorite scenes that was both just funny and heart wrenching was this scene that Aura, Megan, Logan and Zachary where all in the same room having a meeting of the minds. I just loved that scene.

If you have read Shade Go out and pre-order this book now!! It comes out May 3!

Love ties them together. Death can't tear them apart.

Best. Birthday. Ever. At least, it was supposed to be. With Logan's band playing a critical gig and Aura's plans for an intimate after-party, Aura knows it will be the most memorable night of her boyfriend's life. She never thought it would be his last.

Logan's sudden death leaves Aura devastated. He's gone. Well, sort of.

Like everyone born after the Shift, Aura can see and hear ghosts. This mysterious ability has always been annoying, and Aura had wanted nothing more than to figure out why the Shift happened so she can undo it. But not with Logan's violet-hued spirit still hanging around. Because dead Logan is almost as real as ever. Almost.

It doesn't help that Aura's new friend Zachary is so understanding—and so very alive. His support means more to Aura than she cares to admit.

As Aura's relationships with the dead and the living grow ever complicated, so do her feelings for Logan and Zachary. Each holds a piece of Aura's heart...and clues to the secret of the Shift.
Yani's Analysis:
I started this blog last December, but before that I was so busy with school that I wasn't really reading many blogs either. So I guess around that time the world was buzzing about this book, and oblivious me didn't know anything about it until I got an ARC copy of Shift (book 2). With so many great books in my reading pile I put the ARC aside and thought to myself, "if I don't get to it that's okay." NO definitely not okay!! I am so glad my twitter pals where talking about this book, because it made me purchase a copy from Amazon and start reading it right away. And once I started I couldn't stop!

If you are a fan of the mediator series, like I am, you will enjoy this book. It has a lot of the same elements such as the mystery behind the powers that allow to see ghosts. But while Meg's books are all about the character building, Jeri series also has a lot of world building as well. It has a different premise than most ghost books I have read, the fact that there was an even "The Shift" that causes not just one but a the entire population after said event to see ghosts it intriguing.

And I loved Aura and the two boys she was torn between. Sometimes in these love triangle situations you just want to hit the person over the head and scream PICK ONE!! But Aura, she never gets annoying, you understand where she is coming from. It is hard to move on with the past staring you in the face. Also, in the mediator series I was a big Jesse (the ghost) fan, so obviously I connected with Logan. But Zachary was just such a sweet guy. I was torn, so I could see how Aura could be torn too.

I really LOVED this book and Shift even more, but I will get to that later. I highly recommend if you like mystery, paranormal, and amazing reads!!

Review: The Ghost and the Goth

Book: The Ghost and the Goth (Book #1)
Author: Stacey Kade
Publisher: Hyperion Book
Release Date: 6/29/2010
Pages: 281
Source: Bought
Date Read: 2/14/2011

Summary:

Alona Dare–Senior in high school, co-captain of the cheerleading squad, Homecoming Queen three years in a row, voted most likely to marry a movie star… and newly dead.

I’m the girl you hated in high school. Is it my fault I was born with it all-good looks, silky blond hair, a hot bod, and a keen sense of what everyone else should not be wearing? But my life isn’t perfect, especially since I died. Run over by a bus of band geeks—is there anything more humiliating? As it turns out, yes—watching your boyfriend and friends move on with life, only days after your funeral. And you wouldn’t believe what they’re saying about me now that they think I can’t hear them. To top it off, I’m starting to disappear, flickering in and out of existence. I don’t know where I go when I’m gone, but it’s not good. Where is that freaking white light already?

Will Killian–Senior in high school, outcast, dubbed “Will Kill” by the popular crowd for the unearthly aura around him, voted most likely to rob a bank…and a ghost-talker.

I can see, hear, and touch the dead. Unfortunately, they can also see, hear and touch me. Yeah, because surviving high school isn’t hard enough already. I’ve done my best to hide my “gift.” After all, my dad, who shared my ability, killed himself because of it when I was fifteen. But lately, pretending to be normal has gotten a lot harder. A new ghost—an anonymous, seething cloud of negative energy with the capacity to throw me around—is pursuing me with a vengeance. My mom, who knows nothing about what I can do, is worrying about the increase in odd incidents, my shrink is tossing around terms like “temporary confinement for psychiatric evaluation,” and my principal, who thinks I’m a disruption and a faker, is searching for every way possible to get rid of me. How many weeks until graduation?

Yani's Analysis:
As soon as I finished this book, I just could not wait to get my hands on more. Alone Dare is the girl you love to hate, but secretly you would love to be her. She is confident and brutally honest, yet not as insufferable as other characters (see Here Lies Bridget review). It was a cute read, but it also had some depth and mystery. I would say this book is a cross between the seriousness of Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver and the Mediator Series by Meg Cabot.

If you loved the Mediator series as I do, you will really enjoy this book. Told in alternating viewpoints, Alona and Will describe their adventure fighting off ghosts, mean principals, a money grubbing psychiatrist, a dark and scary cloud-like energy ( a la Lost), and their attraction to each other.

This is a refreshing funny take on paranormal romances today, with a side moral lesson of learning to be a nice person. I really really really liked this book and I can't wait for the next one.

Why did I give it 5 stars? While it might not be the deepest, it changed my life type of book, it DID keep me turning the pages anxiously wondering what would happen next.

Review: Here Lies Bridget

Book: Here Lies Bridget
Author: Paige Harbison

Publisher: Harlequin Teen
Release Date: 1/18/2011
Pages: 224
Source: Netgalley
Date Read: 2/12/2011

Summary:
Bridget Duke is the uncontested ruler of her school. The meanest girl with the biggest secret insecurities. And when new girl Anna Judge arrives, things start to fall apart for Bridget: friends don't worship as attentively, teachers don't fall for her wide-eyed "who me?" look, expulsion looms ahead and the one boy she's always loved—Liam Ward—can barely even look at her anymore.

When a desperate Bridget drives too fast and crashes her car, she ends up in limbo, facing everyone she's wronged and walking a few uncomfortable miles in their shoes. Now she has only one chance to make a last impression. Though she might end up dead, she has one last shot at redemption and the chance to right the wrongs she's inflicted on the people who mean the most to her.

And Bridget's about to learn that, sometimes, saying you're sorry just isn't enough….

Yani's Analysis:
Bridget is a really spoiled brat - I wish I could use another word for her, but I keep my online writing clean - who never does anything wrong and nothing is ever her fault. Even when she knows something is wrong, she continue to do it. She claims she is transparent, that people can she how she is feeling through her facial reactions. Well others may see her clearly, but she clearly doesn't. She never thinks of others and is beyond selfish. And although I love these second chances stories, I feel the author went overboard with the character making her almost irredeemable in the reader's eyes.

What kept me reading was Liam and the writing. Harbison is the daughter of another writer and you can tell. Her writing style is quirky and funny; she is really in tune with the YA generation. I like how Bridget talks to the reader, as if in a conversation. But no matter how much I enjoyed the writing style and quality, having a main character I couldn't connect to dampened this book for me.

A lot of people are going to compare this book to Before I Fall, but they are very different. In BIF, you don't see so much of the main character back-story, more of the process of change she goes through. What I liked about that was it was very realistic. The main character tries to be nice and that still doesn't change the outcome of her life. It was about being a better person, unselfish. In this book, her change came from a superficial place. She didn't like how people saw her and although she was in their shoes (literally), she never understood them.

Maybe its because I liked Before I Fall that I couldn't see this book with the proper eyes, but it was still an interesting read.
